When there’s a problem with the plumbing in your house, sometimes using a plunger or unclogging a drain makes for a quick fix. However, when issues such as leaks and drips, overflowing toilets, burst pipes, and others occur, you need a good local plumber, and you need them fast.
Unfortunately, the stress and the urgency of those situations can result in making a bad choice. If you do a Google search for plumbers in Fort Lauderdale, for instance, you’ll get a lot of results.
However, not all plumbing services are the same, and if you choose one that isn’t what it seems to be, you could regret it!
So, what are some things to look for or ask about when choosing plumbing services? Let’s look at some big ones. Be sure to do this ahead of time so that when you need a plumber, you’ll already be prepared!
Checking on these three things will help you quickly narrow down your options.
First, look for or ask about the professional credentials of both the company and its technicians. If in doubt, look up those credentials to make sure they’re from legitimate, respectable organizations. Be extremely suspicious of companies that don’t make it very easy to know what credentials they have.
Also, ask about their insurance and how it will affect you. You don’t want to hire a plumber who breaks things, creates new problems, or makes existing ones worse, or performs subpar work and doesn’t have insurance to back up the work they do and protect your finances.
Finally, look for signs of professionalism. How do the staff respond to you? Are all of their customer reviews on display, or just the good ones? Are their employees uniformed and presentable?
While looking over a plumbing business’s website, see if their technicians have to pass criminal background and if they undergo regular drug testing. Someone with a criminal history could be a safety or theft risk to you and your family, and someone who might be under the influence of alcohol or drugs could perform shoddy work and even make the problem worse.
If you don’t see that information readily available on their website, call and ask.
The cost of plumbing work will always vary based on the exact nature of the job, so you’re probably not going to find exact pricing on a company’s website. However, when you need work done, you should request quotes from at least three companies in order to compare pricing. Look for outliers; if one quote is a lot higher than the others, the company might be ripping people off, but if a quote is a lot lower, that can be a sign that the company cuts costs by performing subpar work, engaging in hidden pricing, shirking licenses and insurance, etc.
Always get quotes in writing and never pay for work upfront.
One exception to getting multiple quotes might be in the case of a plumbing emergency. That’s why, and we’ll repeat this in a little bit, it’s a good idea to start comparing companies ahead of time so that you already have someone reliable in mind when that emergency arises.
One of the best ways to gauge the quality of a plumbing business is to ask for references the company itself can provide or to ask around among friends and neighbors.
You can also look online and read customer reviews for each business you’re considering. High numbers of positive reviews are always a good sign because they’re indicators that the company does good work and also serves a lot of people. A company that has mostly good reviews but not many of them might not have been in operation very long, which might be an indicator of inexperience. Reading detailed reviews, you’ll also get helpful specifics about the company, not just star ratings.
Here’s another way reviews are helpful: negative reviews and how the company responds to them. No company is perfect, and the longer it’s in business, the more likely it is to receive a negative review here and there. However, if you see the company responding constructively and making an attempt to set things straight as opposed to being defensive or argumentative, that’s a sign that the company has a real commitment to customer satisfaction.
Nobody wants to face a plumbing emergency in the middle of the night or, worst case scenario, a holiday weekend, but it happens. When it does, you can’t wait until regular business hours for relief. After all, plumbing emergencies often pose health hazards and risks of significant damage, and they can get worse by the minute.
Most good plumbing companies offer 24/7 services, including on holidays and weekends. When you’re researching plumbers, make sure any plumber you want to go with offers emergency services. You’ll be glad for the time saved if you need them.
